    About the Design:

    • Printed bentwood box panel design with mouse women. Mouse woman is a rodent-like humanoid, known for her great wisdom. She is the tiny oracle, a guide between worlds, and is the smallest of the supernatural beings. Carved and painted bentwood boxes and storage chests are among the most elaborate and prized possessions used to store wealth and ceremonial objects. Box designs, often more complex than typical crest figures, follow a structured arrangement: the upper half of the box depicts a head, with ears in the corners, the body filling the center segment, along with the arms, hands, and/or legs at each side. Representations of box designs in Northwest Coast Art in conjunction with Raven often refer to the story of the Raven stealing the sun from a selfish old man whom Raven tricks by transforming into a human infant, the man’s grandson--who was keeping the sun light hidden in a box.
